I originally posted the below in response to [livejournal.com profile] crafting_change's post on the President's commutation of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's sentence for perjury, obstruction of justice, and lying to investigators. As [livejournal.com profile] rudepundit pointed out elsewhere this morning, the commutation, as opposed to a full pardon, serves as a threat as well as a reward for Libby's fidelity to the Organized Crime Racket of the American Presidency (OCRAP): had he been pardoned he would be at liberty to speak openly about the Valerie Plame outing; but since his conviction is not overturned, he cannot discuss what actually happened without exposing himself to the possibility of further legal charges. Also, with his sentence commuted he can continue his appeal "to clear his name," (< < < tone of voice is everything) and OCRAP can continue to decline any public comment on "the ongoing legal proceedings" and the clearly criminal actions of key OCRAP members (Karl Rove and Dick Cheney principal among them), as long as the appeals drag on, which will be as long as OCRAP needs them to.

< Original comment:>
I am more and more convinced that George W. Bush has little or nothing to do with the actual running of this country, into the ground or otherwise. They just prop him up and let him go, to take the blame for this, that, and the other thing; to amuse the masses with his misstatements and the neolojisms he spews all over the press corps; and to do a spot of dirty work, when it's really important, as in the No Felon Left Behind program when they need to get a crony off the hook [but still in their clutches].

In other news of the evil, I just checked out Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers last night, about the bilking of the people of the U.S. for hundreds of millions of dollars by the unlikely coalition of.... wait for it... Cheney and Halliburton! I-fucking-magine that! The extras to this DVD include very telling excerpts from Senate and House debates on more than half a dozen amendments to wartime spending bills, 2004 - 2006, in which Democrats make the simplest, most common-sensible proposals for reining in the obviously fraudulent activities of Halliburton, subsidiary Kellogg Brown & Root, CACI, L3 Titan, and other companies who are given billion-dollar cost-plus-fee contracts without competition; and on every single occasion they are shot down by the GOP majority, arguing with remarkable aplomb (evil. evil. evil.) that, for example, it would be harmful to the men and women in uniform to disrupt in any way the regular provision of bathing water by Halliburton that's un-chlorinated and contaminated with malaria, typhus, giardia, cryptosporidium, and other pathogens. With the exception of former Sen. Chafee of Rhode Island, every single Republican voted against every single amendment meant to curb or eliminate massive, massive corporate fraud...< /original comment>

As to the issue of sole-sourcing enormous contracts to Halliburton and similar companies, the argument is often made by "conservatives" (by which I mean Republicans who stand to gain and regular folk who are STILL stupid enough to buy their lies1) that "[Hellbunion] is the only company that can do the job." Uh... "the job"... LAUNDRY? Halliburton is the only company that can fucking do laundry? That can cook for troops? That can troll India, Pakistan, the Philippines, and other places for poor people and, in essence, indenture them2 for $3 a day to scrub latrines? That can hire truck drivers (with promises to take all reasonable action to keep them out of harm's way) to move supplies from here to there via roads in active combat zones? Bullshit.

Honestly? The people running the show right now have precisely the same ambitions as Hitler, Pol Pot, any power-mad dictator you can name: to eat the fucking planet. Political leaders are already obsolete: they are nothing more than the front-men and the tools of the corporations. Money is power; power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely; and the maelstrom of obscene asset-acquisition we've seen since Messrs. Reagen and Bush (père) set the legal wrecking ball rolling, all in the name of Ozzie and Fucking Harriet, can be construed only as the ultimate corrupting mechanism. Too much wealth, to these fuckers, can never be enough.

They are not sending 6 million of their enemies to die in concentration camps—yet—because so far they don't have to, and probably won't. They have a slower but just as sure process to consolidate absolutely power over everything—one that involves starving off all the common people who don't matter, appeasing the few that might have a mind to actually oppose them, and saving the actual murder for special occasions—and they're 99 and 44/100th percent there. The crazies who still maintain that the Protocols of the Elders of Zion is real have at least a firm grounding for their anxiety, if not panic: nearly every strategy that was attributed to the Jews—pacification of the population by immersion in entertainments, alcohol, and sex rings particularly true—has come to pass and has facilitated the complete, seamless fiscal governance of the globe (or the parts of it deemed desirable)—only not by Jews, just by whatever flavor of evil, rich men.

We are doomed. The end is nigh. Etc. But just in case I'm wrong, look here and here: iraqforsale.org.

1 I'm serious, I don't understand how anybody can claim the term "conservative" as the politico-philosophic rationale for squandering hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars. It's absurd and insulting to anyone who actually believes in a fiscally responsible and accountable government.
2 E.g., denying them return transit back to their homes if they don't finish their term of work, typically 2 years.
