I marched for national queer equality yesterday. Having marched from MacPherson Square around the White House and down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol, I nudged Nathan, former Lord Blue Pants, to try the awesome cafeteria at the National Museum of the American Indian for the first time. There, despite liking the food well enough, he exacerbated an already infected tooth with a piece of too-long-ago-fried yucca. We didn't really hang around for speeches and whatnot, though we did get to hear both the National and the Queer Anthem ('Somewhere Over the Rainbow') and a bit of Cynthia Nixon's speech. The sound system wasn't great, and Nathan was in pain, so we went home.

I have yet to hear how our numbers compared with the teabaggers from last month. It was, however, enormously discouraging to hear CNBC correspondent John Harwood quoting a White House staffer as saying that yesterday's queer protesters were part of an 'Internet left fringe' that doesn't count for anything with Obama. Harwood said Obama is 'doing well with 90 percent or more of Democrats' and further quoted his anonymous White House source as saying the President's opposition from the left 'need to take off the pajamas, get dressed, and realize that governing a closely divided country is complicated and difficult.'

See John Aravosis's take on the ensuing brouhaha here.

Sigh.

Went to the Maryland Renfest on Saturday; hitched with Lord Faux 'Mo, which allowed me to get in for free before the joint opened, to help set up the House of Musical Tradition booth. I forgot the 'mala' or charm bracelet that [livejournal.com profile] maestro_live had made for my brother-in-law John, to help him stay sober at his first renfest since he got himself that way 2 years ago. I suck. But I did get to spend some time here and there throughout the day with John and my bro [livejournal.com profile] eloquentwthrage—'Leave It to Hamlet' was a Shakespeare's Skum show I hadnae seen before and, true to their reputation, they made it very funny. We also saw Gypsophilia, one of my favorite bands, perform... Actually, I saw two of their shows, plus more at the Pub Sing... they played 'Oglan Oglan' in the first show, 'Ale Brider' in the second, and 'Raggle-Taggle Gypsies' at the Pub Sing.

Despite occasional hanging with brethren, I took a lot of alone time, hanging around the various pubs, singing many songs, and trying in vain to flirt with hot, costumed young(ish) men. I have been told by reliable sources that the renfest is richly populated by gay men, but they all look and act like hetero fratboys in doublets to me. Anyway, Fomo had an exhilarating day: HMT sold nearly $7,000 worth of goods, including a hammer dulcimer, several ukuleles, a bitchin' mandolin, a flute, and who knows how many djembis and boudhrans. Later Saturday night my friend Tritelli sent a text saying his gang is putting together a renfest sally next weekend and inviting me to go along. I bleeb I shall.

Other than that, this 3-day weekend I've re-watched two seasons of The Venture Brothers, did about 10 loads of laundry, made stuffed peppers, and precious little else. I am oddly cash-poor at the moment while certain administrative banking things take longer than they supposeta. So I hadn't the funds to go on a town-full-of-gay-strangers spree last night.

In unrelated news: There is a certain time every fall, without fail, when milk tastes funky. I don't know precisely why this is—a switch from fresh to dried cow feed has always seemed likely to me; but if that is the case, I'm not sure why it doesn't seem to last more than a week or so. Maybe the change in diet causes a critical metabolic event in cows that stabilized pretty quickly; maybe (though I rather doubt this) I just get used to it quickly. Anyway, THIS fall, that time is now. The gallon of 2 percent organic milk I just bought tastes like, I dunno, cardboard. Or maybe sake. Or fenugreek seed.

I took die katzen to the vet's office on Friday morning to get flea baths. This, of course, turned into flea bath, special flea death treatment, leukemia shots, and annual exam, for a total of $293. I was expecting to pay for two flea baths; this is one contributor to my cashlessness. Anyway, having dropped them in the a.m., I went back home and set off two deep-penetration bug foggers, which fogged away all day. So far, no fleas seen since then; kept the cats indoors all weekend and finally gave them their Frontline flea treatments today and let them outside. I'm really, really hoping they're done with fleas for this season. If not, I swear they're going to have to learn to love life as indoor kitties, because I'm just not going to deal with this kind of infestation again.

Now then. I need to rip a whole lot of Nino Rota and throw it on my iPod. I need to get looking at Betty Boop and Felix the Cat and Rocky and Bullwinkle and George of the Jungle and Wacky Races and Perils of Penelope Pitstop so as to make some informed decisions about that to show during 'Saturday Morning Cartoons' at Movie Marathon 48. I need more coffee.
