I originally posted the below in response to
crafting_change's post on the President's commutation of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's sentence for perjury, obstruction of justice, and lying to investigators. As
rudepundit pointed out elsewhere this morning, the commutation, as opposed to a full pardon, serves as a threat as well as a reward for Libby's fidelity to the Organized Crime Racket of the American Presidency (OCRAP): had he been pardoned he would be at liberty to speak openly about the Valerie Plame outing; but since his conviction is not overturned, he cannot discuss what actually happened without exposing himself to the possibility of further legal charges. Also, with his sentence commuted he can continue his appeal "to clear his name," (< < < tone of voice is everything) and OCRAP can continue to decline any public comment on "the ongoing legal proceedings" and the clearly criminal actions of key OCRAP members (Karl Rove and Dick Cheney principal among them), as long as the appeals drag on, which will be as long as OCRAP needs them to. ( Cut for the apolitical, but shame on you for being so. )
