This is absolutely central to any discussion of what the fuck we've been doing in Iraq the last five and a half years. It has never ceased to amaze me at how little traction the notion has gotten that invading an sovereign nation with a predominantly Muslim population without overwhelming military justification might be a phenomenally stupid thing to do, might actually have the opposite effect of what was intended, e.g., by convincing millions more young Muslims of the importance of combating the Great Infidel by any means necessary.

This line of thinking should have been central to the public dialog from day one; and while it wasn't wholly absent, it was one of those things the crackhead liberals said that the GOP hawks dismissed as so much more America-hating by Americans. Never mind there have been signs of increased recruiting by the Taliban and other hardcore Islamists, ever since we took down a secular dictator in respond to an attack by religious warriors.

Now it's 5.5 years after that particular mission was accomplished, and al Qaeda endorsed John McCain yesterday with the explicit rationale that he would continue to bankrupt the United States with neverending wars that can't help but bolster enrollment in the Academy of Jihad. And in response, look what the 'I'm not Bush' candidate is doing:

McCain's surrogates went to great lengths to pooh-pooh the notion that al-Qaeda would prefer McCain's hawkishness to Obama's more reasoned approach to foreign policy. Yet, in the same breath, senior McCain foreign-policy advisor Randy Scheunemann announced, "John McCain will spend what it takes to win" in Iraq. —Huffington Post, 23 October 2008

In other news tonight, Honest Tea's (of Bethesda, Md.) Moroccan Mint Green Tea (organic, gluten-free) is seriously the best thing to happen to bottled soft drinks. Ever. Five grams of sugars per serving—i.e., so very lightly sweetened. Every other commercial iced tea is like drinking candy.

In other other news, the proposal I've been working on like mad for pretty much all of October is done and submitted as of 40 minutes ago. Dinner at my place, 7 p.m. Bring booze.
