...and let me take pains to insist I say "great country" without the sarcasm that would otherwise be imputed to it by conservative locksteppers for whom "liberal" continues to mean "hater of America and probably nascent terrorist." I for one love my homeland, which makes it even more depressing that so much of my homeland hates me.

Constitutional amendments to limit marriage to heterosexuals and/or to ban all domestic partnerships passed in Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Colorado, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Idaho. Arizona (!) voters rejected their constitutional ban bid. (So, uh, [livejournal.com profile] katyaoddio and [livejournal.com profile] timehole... got room?)

To what can we attribute this continuing trend of overwhelming majority of citizens supporting the denial of equal treatment under the law to gay people? Is there some compelling, intelligent, humanist argument I have been missing?

Fox News reported: "Almost a quarter of voters today were white Born-Again Christians, a Republican stronghold, and they favored Republican candidates by more than 2 to 1."

Let me quote that again: "Almost a quarter of voters today were white Born-Again Christians, a Republican stronghold, and they favored Republican candidates by more than 2 to 1."

And now, because this is a free country, I really have to say it scares the BLISTERING FUCK out of me that we have a climate that encourages our citizens to be so profoundly, mindbogglingly stupid as to not only believe in "The stereotype of harps 'n' haloes Halleluiah heaven"(1) but also to admit it to poll workers. Make no mistake: Whereas anybody, including an atheist like me, can call him/herself a Christian (given an admiration for the teachings/koans/inarguably anti-capitalist lifestyle of Yeshua of Nazareth), only a dyed-in-the-wool idiot of epic proportions who actually buys the unmitigated bullshit about divinity and sin and salvation propagated by the fundie churches (almost as a side note to fundraising, these days, and almost always antithetical to actual Yeshuan philosophy) would label him/herself a Born-Again Christian.

ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS. ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS. ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS. ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS. ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS. ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS. ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS. ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS. ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS. ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS. ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS. ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS. ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS. ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS. ALMOST A QUARTER OF VOTERS.

This rhetorical bludgeoning is not indicative of any change of opinion or esteem in which I hold those friends of mine who embrace whatever aspects of American conservatism. However, I will never again take seriously any claims or suggestions that the overwhelming body of conservative voters are similarly good, smart people and not a bunch of milk-fed veal (where "milk" = "whatever group-based hatred we can attribute to Yahweh and get away with it").

Bring back the lions.
