[hey, so this is nowhere near done (i've not even gotten to Falcon Ridge yet) but i figure i might as well post the first bit of it...]

People with more time under they belts tend to notice more acutely—or at least more often and aloud—how much of it has scooted past since they first noticed. ‘Holy shit,’ they’ll say, ‘I’m old,’ when somebody mentions that so-and-so recently graduated from parent to grandparent; or ‘Yikes, we’ve known each other how long?’ It takes a while, typically, for folks to realize there are certain ways of making that long-time-past thing work for them; they tentatively try out bits they think will make them sound all cool and nostalgic to other old-timers: like blurting out ‘Hey, let’s sing that song we used to sing twenty years ago’ before realizing that they don’t remember it either. Once they get the hang of their antiquity, though, folks turn on to its true uses—stuff like, ‘I’ve been coming to this festival since before you were born, so what I say goes, you goofy small person, you.’

I’m still getting used to this part, and half-hoping I never get really good at it.
