My laptop arrived about an hour ago via UPS. There was a service summary sheet in the box that says: "Repair Comments: Replaced and tested motherboard, IO baord [sic] and USB ribbon cable, unit now functions properly."

I set it up on my desk. The USB ports are now working correctly. Only thing is, the computer won't recognize the modem, so I can't get online. Hmmm, methinks, what's up with that? Now the modem has TWO possible connections to the computer: ethernet cable and USB cable. I've never been sure which one was functioning. Now I find that my laptop does not have the drivers for the modem installed, so the USB connection is useless. But the ethernet connection just isn't functioning. I call Verizon DSL and the service rep walks me through some troubleshooting. He believes the problem is with the ethernet port or my network card. Needless to say, this was not a problem before my computer went in for repair (even after they sent it back the first time with a new HD I could still connect to DSL).

So I double-check by re-hooking up my backup laptop (Paul's new laptop, the benefits of which he has yet to enjoy); indeed, Paul's laptop has no modem drivers either; it's connecting purely through the ethernet connection, which is how I'm connected right now. So the cable's fine. So the ethernet port is not. They broke my computer AGAIN. This is the FIFTH problem, the FOURTH repair required, and the THIRD problem caused directly by Best Buy action. Do you think they'll replace it NOW maybe? I'm on hold, of course. More presently.

UPDATE: The rep tells me there's nothing he can do. I must take the laptop to a Best Buy store. Again. Wish me luck.
